Essential Oils that are harmful to Pets

While there are several Essential Oil benefits to our furry babies, there are certain oils that should not be used with our dogs and cats.

These are the oils to watch out for:

  • Tea tree
  • Cinnamon
  • Citrus
  • Pennyroyal
  • Pine
  • Sweet birch (also known as just Birch)
  • Wintergreen
  • Ylang ylang
  • Oregano
  • Garlic
  • Thyme
  • Clove
  • Horseradish
  • Juniper
  • Yarrow
  • Eucalyptus
  • Anise

How do you know if your furry baby shows symptoms of poisoning?  As with anything, it’s best to stay alert and observe your pets to see if there’s any change in behavior.  Here’s a list of possible symptoms:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Drooling
  • Fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Difficulty walking or stumbling
  • Muscle tremors
  • Pawing at the mouth or face
  • Redness or burns on their lips, tongue, skin or gums
  • Vomiting

If you notice any of these symptoms, bring your pets to the VET right away.  It’s also best if you bring the oil you suspect so they can easily diagnose the situation.

It also goes without saying that you should store your essential oils in a place that your pets can’t reach.
